How we size a centrifugal pump for a retrofit

Field notesgaurav-tiwari

Most retrofit pumps are oversized. The old unit was chosen for a duty point that changed years ago, and the new one gets matched to the nameplate instead of the process.

Start with the real duty point

Log flow and discharge pressure for a full production week. The duty point is where the pump spends most of its hours, not the peak it hits once a month.

  • Measure suction pressure, not just discharge.
  • Check the NPSH margin at the highest liquid temperature.
  • Note any throttled valves; they hide wasted head.

A pump that runs near its best efficiency point lasts longer, uses less power and is quieter.

Then pick the frame

Choose the smallest frame that holds the duty point inside the preferred operating range, and trim the impeller rather than throttling the discharge.
